This but also every work of art I’ve ever loved and the methods of attending to objects with care and thought, too. You know just the last of a dying field, sitting here watching the dark roll in.

in college, i found a cheap used miklós radnóti volume. that week, a teacher was digressing and saying “this hungarian poet … the name escapes me …” when i said “radnóti?” she looked at me with the hostile amazement reserved for possessed children who suddenly speak akkadian

when i teach personal narrative writing, i encourage my students to start with a photo they took. they often include these photos in the essays, and so i learned that the tiniest, most harmless looking girl in class will inevitably have pics with a rifle and a buck’s carcass.

it will take a few years, but it actually won't surprise me if a new "élite style" emerges, spiky, characterful, full of euphuism and syntaxis, and the plebs will be left once again with the déclassé style (airtight, bland parataxis).

i require my students to use AI to help them come up with arguments for their essays, and then i bring in some glue and popsicle sticks and show them how to build a little coffin for their brains. you need to prepare them for the real world

as a huge consumer of leopardi and schopenhauer and cioran, i feel like i’m staring at linear A here. like what are you talking about. what are you so scared of.

I don’t care how popular it becomes, how ubiquitous, I will never stop resenting the slow and universal replacement of the word “artist” with “creative” - it is so insidious, to me.

maybe this is the secret trick to re-igniting student interest in literature: all of the squares need to tell them to be afraid of it.

Adm Vlll If you do all your university work with AI then why should employers hire you instead of just downloading whatever AI assistant actually did the work? You’ve made yourself superfluous.

It's not likely to win over many people nowadays, but one reason to not outsource your reading and thinking to ChatGPT or whatever is the pleasures of going through life with a well-stocked mind

hilarious, delightful, true. but makes me realize that most art forms don't have a lovely term like "kapellmeister," as orchestral conducting does, to denote an effective and disciplined, but ultimately minor, talent. most good hollywood studio directors are kapellmeisterish.
