Pacific Northwest Ballet danced Twyla Tharp's 'Sweet Fields' so beautifully. This far-flung admirer swooned. fjordreview.com/blogs/all/swee…

The Washington Post is doing incredible, difficult, and important work:
Palestinian paramedics said Israel gave them safe passage to save a 6-year-old girl in Gaza. They were all killed. washingtonpost.com/world/interact…

My first thoughts on the just-announced San Francisco Ballet 2025 season. Surprised more people aren't saying this: Not a single work by Balanchine? Not one? rachelhowardfootnotes.substack.com/p/candid-first…

My San Francisco Chronicle SFChronicle Datebook review of the 'Dos Mujeres' program at SF Ballet last night. I didn't love the radical retake on 'Carmen.' I didn't hate it. More granularity on this in the review. Tell me your thoughts if you see it. datebook.sfchronicle.com/dance/carmen-s…

SPD closed owing many small presses thousands of dollars. For a big five or large press, this is a cost of business. For small presses, it may break some of us. Don’t let the art die. Support— donate, buy books, review, share. No support is too small

Small presses formerly distributed by the now-defunct SPD, which I've heard hasn't paid the presses in some time. Please order directly from them. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

Well this is going to be a shitshow. The hardest thing to handle as a small press is distribution, and how distributors function, and the schedule by which they pay. SPD folding overnight is going to cost presses you love money. Good time to order a book directly from your favs.

KT Nelson's 'Dead Reckoning' fairly devastated me last night at ODC/Dance. The company is dancing at its fiercest. Here's my review for the San Francisco Chronicle SFChronicle Datebook . I'm back tonight for Brenda Way and Kimi Okada's premieres. datebook.sfchronicle.com/dance/odc-prog…

In 2022 I had the amazing experience of reading Christine Murphy's novel-in-progress as a Grub Street mentor. Today she let me know it will be published by Knopf in 2025. If the hypocritical ways our culture treats rape infuriate you, you must read it. grubstreet.org/blog/dept-of-c…

My San Francisco Chronicle SFChronicle Datebook review of the 'British Icons' program at San Francisco Ballet. 'Song of the Earth' with Wona Park could not be more beautiful. Six more shows.

I had the great honor of dinner with Yuan Yuan Tan to talk about her retirement--after 29 seasons--from San Francisco Ballet. She is clear that it will not be the end of her career. Behind a paywall but out in print tomorrow. sfchronicle.com/entertainment/…

A little late to this party, but I've started a Substack--hope you will join me there if you'd like to keep up with my dance writing, with occasional updates on my upcoming writing classes and my literary doings.

A second take: I reviewed (again) San Francisco Ballet's 'Mere Mortals' for Fjord Review, going further with questions and misgivings. The company has just announced an April encore for the Floating Points/Aszure Barton/Hamill Industries production.
