Young and educated Afghan women tell me they are burning their degree certificates and diplomas, so that they won't be targeted by the Taliban fighters going door to door. This is beyond heartbreaking.

Following the Vietnam War, our country welcomed 120,000 refugees in a single year. Yet the United States has only taken in ~2,000 Afghan refugees thus far. We have a duty to save lives — and to do so, we must welcome many, many more refugees as quickly as possible.

After the fall of Saigon, the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act allowed 130,000 refugees from South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia to enter the United States under a special status. The same should be done for Afghan refugees today.
