The problem is that a significant minority of prime age men left the work force from about the 1950s through the mid 2010s. However, aside from a pandemic bump, that has leveled off since.

I live near the WH; guards at the metro are part of my daily life. They’ve shown such grace, genuinely earning the community’s trust. This couple of days has been so hard. Just saw two guards on duty at the metro: they nodded, smiled, said hi as usual and I broke into tears.

I find Americans more individualistic than any other cultures I have interacted with irl… in X this viral tweet is perhaps not representation of an American rather a fake account pretending to be a German girl. Let’s not analyze society with that maybe? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Grateful to the wonderful team at Challey Institute for inviting me to share my research! Not only did they provide a platform to speak with students, but they also made outstanding efforts like the one below to bring these ideas to the broader Fargo community.

Spoke to students about something on everyone’s mind: how AI is reshaping the job market. Grateful to the Challey Institute for the opportunity. I am esp moved by the warmth Fargo shows its international students. Midwestern hospitality is real. ❤️

To recap: poverty has declined a lot, a $140K poverty line makes no sense, and the typical person can actually comfortably spend what the typical person spends. Immigration is economically good for humans. Obviously a poor Honduran or a poor Chadian who makes it to the U.S. or France has much better prospects than her cousin who stayed—literally about ten times better for her and especially for her children. I chat frequently with

In an inegalitarian society labor market misallocates talent sorting workers by norm rather than comparative advantage. The relative higher status of straight men in the past clearly wasn’t triumph of merit and diminished once firms matched workers to their true marginal product.
