My 1st first-author preprint is out on bioRxiv this morning! We use 3D reconstructions of sorghum to measure phyllotaxy (arrangement of leaves around the stem in horizontal space). 1/ biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Procedurally generated 3D sorghum models produce training data that teaches AI models how to segment individual leaves in photos of real plants. Really fun project with the Benes lab team at Purdue Computer Science. UNL PSI Nebraska Agronomy and Horticulture (1/2)

A recent The Plant Phenome Journal study develops a neural network for leaf segmentation in sorghum using photorealistic 3D models. Achieves 90% accurate leaf counting & a mean IoU score of 0.51! 📊 #DeepLearning More details: acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… James Schnable

Karla karla cuellar perez is an undergraduate researcher comparing eQTLs regulating the expression of orthologous genes in maize and sorghum. Really remarkable work.

Yesterday, we added a new member to the family. We adopted Bear from the Humane Society after he was surrendered for being “too aggressive”. Later, we were told it was truly because the previous owners got a new puppy and he was too old Now he can enjoy his retirement with us 🦴

Of course not only PhD students Sofiya Arora a co mentored MS student who is understanding the downstream consequences of natural cis regulatory gene expression variation. And Caner Yavuz visiting scholar making better maize tissue culture, also with natural genetic variation.

The biggest impact I'll ever have as a professor is the people I help to train. Felt wonderful to see so many current trainees and lab alumni together in one place this past weekend.

Kyle Linders has been part of my team for half a decade. Undergrad, grad student, and technician. He takes such ownership of his projects and his teams. Today was his last day. Leaving us for bigger and better things in the private sector. Good luck, Kyle! You'll be missed.
