Like many others, I’m honestly sad and angry about how we’ve politicized galamsey in Ghana. The evidence of its damages are around us, lives with us and affects us everyday. The current government rode on this issue to win votes last year. But 9 months in power, all we’ve had is

talk. Very little action. And meanwhile, our lands and waters keep dying. Ghana has always had gold. But never have we allowed greed to eat us up this badly, destroying the very forests we proudly put on our national flag.

Children are spending more time in pits than in classrooms. Entire communities are losing their future before our eyes. Our major water bodies are polluted. Some have dried up. Others have turned muddy. What are we leaving future generations? This isn’t the Ghana our forefathers

left us. To make it worse, people now boldly post videos, boasting they won’t stop destroying forests. Some even threaten to kill security forces who try to intervene. How did we get here? Security personnel are sent to the bushes all the time and they come back with their

pockets filled with the same evil money they were sent to fight against. Government must act decisively, and act now. If we lose this fight, we lose Ghana. We’re not the only country with gold; but we may become the only one that sacrificed its future for it.
