Just because you have an extensive vocabulary doesn’t mean you should use it in every public speaking situation. Good public speakers are audience-centered, and use language that is appropriate for both the audience and the occasion. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Common grammatical mistake: saying, “I could care less” when you really mean, “I couldn’t care less.” Think of it this way - if you COULD care less, it means you DO CARE to some degree. If you COULDN'T care less, you don't care at all. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Avoid starting sentences with the word "so." ("So, I'm happy to speak to you tonight.") Essentially, you're using a VOCALIZED PAUSE at the beginning of a thought. Pause FIRST, decide what you want to say, then SAY IT. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Unless showing a video w/sound, continue talking to the audience as you present or demonstrate visuals. It’s okay to pause for a moment or two while you pour, measure, tie, or otherwise interact w/your visuals, but beware of “dead air.” #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

#PublicSpeaking can give you an adrenaline-endorphin rush similar to those produced by skydiving, surfing, and bungee jumping. And I guarantee that public speaking is safer than any extreme sport. #PainlessPublicSpeaking

Asking the audience a question is a common technique for opening a speech. A question engages an audience directly, since it solicits their participation. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Most people tend to remember the beginning & end of a speech. When the introduction & conclusion share a common tread, each of those parts – & the entire speech – becomes that much more memorable. This is known as a CIRCULAR CONCLUSION. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Locking one hand momentarily can help minimize nervous gestures. With 2 hands buried in your pockets, you look like you’re looking for change, not giving a speech. With 1 hand locked & the other free, you’ll appear comfortable & confident. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

SIGNPOSTING introduces key ideas in a speech w/ a numerical value & reinforces that number throughout the speech. Tell the audience how many key ideas you're going to cover. Each time you get to a new key idea, reference that idea's number. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

Even if you can read aloud extremely well, delivering a speech from a script will negatively affect your eye contact, vocal variety, and your ability to monitor audience feedback. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

If you are describing the size of a foreign country, region, or area, in addition to square miles or meters, give your audience a familiar local reference – “half the size of Ohio” or “about the size of Leeds,” for example. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

When practicing your speech, get into the habit of turning away from your screen & delivering your speech to your (imagined) audience. Look at your visuals only when you'll need to draw your audience’s attention to something on the screen. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking
