Nations with weaker institutions can progress, but slower, with more setbacks. The #EU was built on the principle that advanced countries support others. That principle was abandoned for #Türkiye in 2006. The cost? Democratic backsliding, political confrontation, provocation.

How does the international community addresse the situation in Gaza. Most people are not aware of disputes taking place in the UN. We can not find a way out of conflicts if people are not informed. Here is one of the recent UN security council meetings: youtu.be/D9iRF_q2H5g?si…

#Iran’s tragedy begins with the #Mossadegh era, when Western powers overthrew a democratically elected government without legal grounds, paving the way for radicalization. In 2000, Madeleine Albright, Secretary of State, apologized. Today, we still stand among the rubble.

Territorial #integrity is a principle increasingly ignored. After wars in Europe and the Middle East, Asia may be next. China holds a historically rooted position and seems determined to resolve the #Taiwan issue on its terms.

In the late ’80s, students played games where the goal was to build #nukes and eliminate opponents. That generation is now in their 50s and 60s. I wonder how such games shaped their view of power, war, and risk.

For those who do not know about #Iran, much. Some basic numbers: - Population: around 90 million. - Second largest gas reserves of the world. - Fourth largest oil reserves of the world. - Average age 32.

Back in #Germany, I am struck by how clueless discussions on #Iran are. No talk of what a destabilized Caspian region could trigger: migration waves, energy crises, & more.. On my last Middle East trip, the EU was already politically sidelined. Now it is just swaying with events.

After Russia’s #war on Ukraine, nations turned to weaponization. After Israel’s strikes on Iran, nuclear ambitions will likely spread. Tragic logic: fear grows when hegemons fuel it instead of de-escalating by using their power. This chain becomes almost impossible to break.

Possible economic consequences of a full-fledged #war against Iran, specifically for the USA. 1 Price surge 2 Rising budget deficit 3 Higher long-term interest rates 4 Risk of global recession 5 Financial market shock I seriously doubt this has been thought through thoroughly.

Central banks must stay independent. If politicians controlled monetary policy, they would lower interest rates, sooner or later, to gain short-term support, but fueling inflation, and hurting long-term economic stability.

New #Despotism explained by president Nixon in 1992, Yorba Linda. "Without major outside aid, Russia may turn to a new despotism which could be a far more dangerous threat to peace, freedom, and particularly to peace, than was the old Soviet totalitarianism. Others will follow."

#Oil at $120 isn’t a tail-risk anymore. - Hormuz tension - OPEC reaction, tight supply - Strong demand (AI, travel, heat) Stack two drivers, and $120 is on the table fast. We will see.

Was soll das #Linnemann
