There’s sometimes criticism of text books, but in my experience ordinary classroom teachers are crying out for high quality, properly sequenced, comprehensive resources, so they can focus on crafting amazing lessons for the pupils they know so well. Exciting times!

328 studies over 50 years show that direct instruction (structured guidance for teachers, teaching discrete skills before application, daily checks on learning, regular testing for mastery) has consistent, large positive effects on student achievement: bit.ly/2Leaaxl ($)

Tried my new visualiser out for first time today. Amazing how great their behaviour is when you are modelling the work on the same worksheet as them, and never have to turn your back to write on the board. Absolute Game Changer.

Every year my school hosts an event for over 70's with over 100 attending. It's tomorrow and I can not wait. Our kids love serving them and they are the most appreciative, fun and polite group you could ever meet.

Please try and remember when the students return that not all students will have had a great holiday and not to punch the pious colleague who goes out of their way to remind you of that as if you don't already know.

What a fantastic initiative #teachingvacancyuk is! Every penny given to recruitment companies is a penny that can’t be spent on children in schools. And with reports of some recruiters opting for fairly hostile tactics, I hope this free alternative proves hugely popular. x.com/oldandrewuk/st…

What happened at #carillion is absolutely what could happen to the academies and MATs system in English schools. There is a reason why public services should be run by councils & government. The promotion of the pursuit of profit is incompatible with decent public service values.

If you want to see a good teacher, find the one who had the worst day in the world despite giving everything they had, then marked books, then turned up to do it all again the next day. You won’t have to search long to find them.

How have I never come across describingwords.io until today? Type in word you want described and get massive word bank of adjectives. Click the adjectives to see dictionary definitions. This could be a massive timesaver for pupil generated word banks and for vocab work!

Over last couple of years I have used 'What Went Wrong?' questions in maths to encourage reasoning & address misconceptions. This year I collated them for every big maths objective except geometry. There's over 90 questions here for free if you want them: tes.com/teaching-resou…

Every half term, a teacher has to record every "intervention" they've made with each student, then attend a "pupil progress" meeting to discuss what they've recorded. Then record new targets based on what they've recorded. After that, they can plan some lessons.

Here's something hot off the Ofsted press. To determine whether you should be inspected, you will now be exposed to 'Machine learning'. New to you? It's new to me and everyone else outside of Ofsted too, but this is the future: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

Most important principle of learning: listen with an open heart to those who see the world differently than you do. Can you think of one more important? Truly, I can’t.
