The double tropical cyclone sandwich around Taiwan was not a scenario I envisioned for PRECIP 2022. The atmosphere never ceases to amaze 🌧
As part of the PRECIP 2022 Field Campaign and as an NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research ASP postdoc, I’m working at Yonaguni, Okinawa, Japan! It’s been quite an adventure. Not much on the radar today but there were some gusty winds last night! 💨☁️
Me: “let me go grab lunch before the storms fire up” PRECIP 2022 The atmosphere: “let me dump a bit of rain over you”
We are continuing IOP10 (intense observing period) today. Here’s NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research @ncareol’s SPOL radar doing a “360” scan.
A rainy day at S-Pol! I'd say IOP10 is going well 😁 PRECIP 2022
We did a coordinated S-Pol RHI scans with a GPM pass today from the CWB PRECIP 2022 and TAHOPE Ops center! Last week of PRECIP! Go PRECIP!
Being apart of PRECIP 2022 has been an awesome experience! I have learned so much, meet so many amazing people, and got to try so much great Taiwanese food!!! Had to get an S-Pol selfie, such a photogenic radar!
My last PRECIP 2022 shift in Japan 🇯🇵launching radiosondes! It’s been a great experience during my NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research NSF NCAR Mesoscale & Microscale Meteorology ASP Postdoc, I’ve learned so much! 08/07 00UTC & 06UTC Yonaguni soundings launched! 🎈🎈🎈
The sun sets and illuminates a distant storm that we are currently scanning with the S-Pol radar. Only one more day of PRECIP operations in Taiwan! 📸 Nicholas Golden
The final sounding from Hsin-Chu has been launched for PRECIP! 00 UTC 11 August also marks the end of S-Pol radar operations in Taiwan. Thank you to all who’ve helped us get to this important milestone in our project! Video credit thanks to Nicholas Golden
Thank you PRECIP 2022 for my first-ever field campaign and the opportunity to reunite with my BFF Emily Luschen in Taiwan. It was so much fun working with the S-Pol radar and the Hsinchu automatic balloon launcher. I can't wait to analyze the radar data at CSU!
#PennState scientists are working with researchers from seven institutions and NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research as part of PRECIP 2022, a field campaign funded by U.S. National Science Foundation to study extreme rainfall, which can trigger deadly and damaging events like flooding and landslides: ow.ly/ksRU50Kj6ft
What causes extreme rainfall? With U.S. National Science Foundation funding, James Ruppert, Oklahoma Meteorology, & grad students Theresa Lincheck & Emily Luschen traveled to Taiwan & Japan to learn about what drives heavy tropical rainfall as part of the PRECIP project, led by Colorado State University! 🌧️ bit.ly/OUPRECIP
