But Mike McCardell is an unusual reporter. He made a career out of turning the mundane and ordinary into something extraordinary. His musing about an old shoe lying in the middle of the road and how it got there is just one example that’s stuck with me for decades. Eventually..

after a stint working in the US, I was lucky enough to get a job in Vancouver working with Mike, where I got to see his artistry firsthand. He’d wander around the city talking to people, with no real plan, and always find a story that reflected the kindness, connection and even..

sometimes the suffering we all share. His stories.. almost always about ordinary people.. connected us in ways that were surprising and enlightening and joyful. His stories where the bow that wrapped up the News Hour in a way that gave us hope that things would be OK..

One day, Mike no longer worked for us for reasons I’ve never fully understood other than one day a TV executive is going to decide my time is up too. Mike went over to our competitor CTV to continue his unique brand of storytelling, until yesterday when he retired….

and I just want Mike to know how much he meant to me, to the News Hour, and to this province. There will never be another like him. BUT! He’s a great and prolific writer and his books have raised a lot of money for charity so read him! Here’s yesterday’s send off for a legend:
