This morning we placed a wreath in honor of the POWs held captive at Oflag 64 in Szubin, Poland. Oflag 64 was the first and largest POW camp for U.S. Ground Force officers. The first Americans sent to Oflag 64 had been captured in the North African campaign.

As the Soviets approached, the Germans forced all able POWs to evacuate January 21, 1945, sending them on a death march traveling over 400 miles through bitter winter conditions.

Mariusz from the Polish-American Foundation for the Commemoration of POW Camps in Szubin guided us through the former grounds of the camp and showed artifacts found or that has been donated from family members of the POWs. I look forward to returning when the museum is complete!

This morning the former #Oflag64 grounds were visited by a group traveling on a tour through National WWII Museum with Sarah Kirksey and Dr. Alexandra Richie. Our permanent exhibition is still under construction but the temporary exhibit was prepared for this special occasion.
