Yesterday lwe said a sad goodbye to our last fieldschool of 2024 but there is still more work to do. Our volunteers will finish off the D enclosure, Roman building, etc, over August. #archaeology #poulton #roman

Our volunteers are finishing the D enclosure ditch sections this months. We are still finding animal bone, and what looks like a fragment of Iron Age pottery. #archaeology #ironage #poulton

My walk past the old dining hall for the WW2 base of RAF Poulton has just revealed this piece of an old cup! I love this find! #Archaeology #WW2 #Poulton

My favourite find of 2024 is this wonderfully preserved coprolite of late Iron Age/early Roman date. It contains a clear sphincter impression and crown where it was squeezed out. The flat under-surface suggests it was squashed while still moist. Happy Days! #coprolite #poulton

The case of the Poulton coprolite continues! The initial impression of zooarchaeologist Hannah Russ is that the ancient poo is probably human! This is a rare find indeed! The owner of this bowel movement would have no idea of the impact two millennia later! #coprolite #poulton

The new season of Digging for Britain is out tomorrow, with the Poulton Project due for broadcast on 14th January (on iplayer from tomorrow night). We cover some of the exciting discoveries into medieval diseases made during the genetic analysis by the Crick. #poulton #medieval

It's the 2025 season and we are back. This year we are continuing to investigate the medieval chapel graveyard, and extending the excavation of the Iron Age/Roman landscape #arcaheology #ironage #poulton

The field season has started and we are investigating medieval burials cut into an earlier wall. Although we don't have firm date, the worked sandstone appears to have been re-used from a structure of some importance. #archaeology #medieval #poulton

A new season brings new discoveries. We have backfilled and extended our trench to the east and south. Several new roundhouse gullies and multiple other features have been revealed. #archaeology #ironage #poulton

We held a special burial today to return some medieval human bone back to the graveyard from whence it came. Our Master's students and Poulton trustees attended. Sincerest thanks to Father Shaw, who was kind enough to conduct the reburial service. #archaeology #poulton #medieval

It is our last week with students from LJMU, who have supplemented their studies by gaining experience at Poulton. They were joined by Anastasia, a PhD candidate from the Francis Crick Institute studying ancient diseases. She had a great time with us and made a new friend!

Today was the first day of our fieldschool with Southern Connecticut State University students. They learnt to trowel, uncovering roundhouse gullies and fragments of Iron Age pottery. We even saw the last functional Lancaster Bomber fly over! #archaeology #ironage #scsu
