At the start of the New Year the crescent Moon will approach & pass Venus, making a beautiful pairing in the sky that will look lovely to the naked eye & stunning in binoculars & small telescopes. They will be at their closest & most striking in the evening twilight on Jan 3rd.

Comet G3 ATLAS was an impressive sight for southern hemisphere observers after surviving its close perihelion passage with the Sun a few days earlier

Clear last night here in Kendal after the storm blew through, so I went out to photograph the planets currently "on parade". All images here are crops from processed stacks of photos taken with a Canon 700D tracking the sky on an iOptron Sky Tracker. Planets are labelled.

Took advantage of a rare clear night in Kendal to take some planet portraits tonight, all taken using a Canon 700D DSLR on a (vintage!) iOptron Corp. SkyTracker... 1) wide field showing Mars and Jupiter with the stars of Orion and Taurus...

2) Jupiter shining brightly close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters...

3) Mars shining close to Castor and Pollux
