Paul Downing (c1870s-1906) was a black American trans man living in England. Recorded by doctors as a 'vagrant lunatic' and misgendered and mocked in the press, he lived and died in the asylum as a woman. In claiming our LGBT+ past, we also claim, and remember, Paul Downing.

Hannah Snell (1723-1792) was a British woman who queered her gender to become a soldier and sailor. After retiring and receiving her pay, she appeared on stage in her role as James Grey, declaring: ‘I am as much a woman as my mother ever was and my real name is Hannah Snell!’

Suzi Ruffell is a gay comedian who grew up in ‘a proper Pompey geezer-ish family’ but left to ‘create a life as a professional show off’. She now lives in Brighton with her wife and child, ‘surrounded by other queer parents’. She creates ‘comedy that’s positive and inclusive’.

Jensen Ryan, aka The Dark Prince, is a gay pro wrestler in Portsmouth. He worried his sexuality would be an obstacle, but was supported by his local club and realised: ‘The world of pro-wrestling does have a place for the LGBTQ+ community and I am proud to be a part of it!’

Rev Hannah Barraclough is Portsmouth Cathedral’s curate. She came out as bisexual in 2020, calling herself 'a gobby Yorkshire queer Rev who loves life, banter and Jesus’. In 2022 she tweeted after Pride: ‘Feeling threatened and judged by no one and wholly and wonderfully loved’.

Lewis Hancox is a trans comedy creator, TikTok sensation, and author-illustrator living in Portsmouth. Welcome to St Hell is ‘filled with humour and teenage mishaps… heartfelt, fun and accessible’. He wants ‘LGBTQ teens to have the only book I wish I'd had growing up’.
