Bee-mimicking hoverfly Volucella bombylans has been one of the most conspicuous insects here in the last couple of weeks - more numerous than real bumblebees. We've seen orange-, buff- and white-tailed forms, many bumbling around in mating pairs or visiting Wild Angelica flowers

Rathlin Stickybeak Some really unusual forms there. I thought I knew all the forms of bombylans but that first one is mega (trying to be a monticola?). Saw some unusual forms on the Outer Hebrides too - maybe it's an Atlantic seaboard phenomenon due to unusual Bombus assemblages & isolation.

Is there a known bee virus that paralysis the back two legs? This is the second one I've seen this year. Mated just fine and laying slabs, however they are looking to supercede her, which makes sense.

I love doing shook swarms at this time of year. If I had the time & the frames I'd happily do it to all colonies & accept the 10% loss and the subsequent fall off of numbers. It's worth it to clear out the varroa&pathogens alone.
