Leads are cracks in the sea ice that influence the #Arctic heat budget. Find out how we study them using high-resolution helicopter observations from the #MOSAiC expedition in our latest study! ⬇️

#EGU2024! Today at 16:54–16:56 (CEST) it is time to learn about melt pond detection from infrared images using a large segmentation model! meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU24/EGU24-20…

Disaster movie night of our group! Watching such a film (sun eruptions, "interesting physics", shift of the Earth crust, volcanoes, ...) with a bunch of environmental scientists: some discussions are inevitable 😉

Did you ever wonder how AWI Medien 's airborne laser scanner data can help classifying #Arctic sea ice surfaces from high-resolution #SAR data? Can the satellite 🛰️ data tell us whether there is open water, level or deformed ice? Check out this new paper! #MOSAiCexpedtion

85°N/43°E #Arctic Ocean: we had our first ice station! For many it was the first time on #seaice. So it was an exciting experience and a great learning opportunity! #Polarstern anchored to an ice floe and we took an ice core in the footprint of our microwave radiometers. #PS144

Very excited to be at the EU Polar Science Week in Copenhagen this week. Some of our MOSAiC Expedition Expedition work (showcasing a polar bear group member 😀) was shown during the opening plenary by Mark Drinkwater. ESA Earth Observation European Commission Copernicus EU

During one of the ice station during #Polarstern cruise #PS144 the upward-looking cloud radar observed cirrus clouds (lower left), which you can also see in the lower right and upper left photos. Find more information under follow-polarstern.awi.de and blog.uni-koeln.de/awares/.

Update from Janna on #Polarstern expedition #PS144 in the #Arctic Ocean: "I am observing these frost flowers currently quite often! Super beautiful! I am not sure whether they alter the microwave radiometer signal, but I plan to find that out 😉"
