Ida Lupino has one movie airing on TCM in April. It’s a showing this weekend. One of her later movies and one that has not been shown on the network in the six years I’ve been tracking.

• Apr 27, 11pm CT and Apr 28, 9am — THE BIG KNIFE (1955)

I'm just off a Zoom w/George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive & learned exciting news - he discovered footage was missing. THE MAN I LOVE Blu-ray includes 6 minutes cut post theatrical release due to music rights issues, not seen since 1956!

1944—Prompted by servicemen, Ida Lupino fights to break out of “psychopathic” roles.

They “told her by letter, in person, and by proxy through her husband, Capt. Louis Hayward of the Marine Corps. ‘They advised me to come up out of the muck and be my own simple self,’ she said.”

Warner Archive has done it again. The HD master used for the Blu-Ray of this 1940 classic is from a 4K scan of the original camera negative. Needless to say, it looks fabulous Equally fabulous are George Raft, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan and a scene-stealing Ida Lupino

Dorothy Arzner and Ida Lupino — the only two women directors in Hollywood during most of its “golden age” — photographed at an event celebrating Arzner’s career in January 1975.

This was a find! I had never seen them pictured together before.

If you want to listen to an absolute treat, I highly encourage you to turn on this Lux Radio Theatre program reenacting REBECCA (1940) a year later with Ronald Colman and Ida Lupino. So brilliant, it almost makes you question the original casting!

Ida Lupino: “I’m tired of putting make-up on my face and rushing around looking for good pictures for myself. That’s why I went into business as a director. I want to give young people a chance.” — Photoplay, Nov. 1951

Ida Lupino’s first years in films are often dismissed, including by herself, as her playing “fluffy ingenues.” Many of her roles are more interesting than that would suggest.

“Yours for the Asking” (1936) is one such, a comedy where she plays a con artist and steals the show.

Ginger fishing at her Oregon ranch, another hobby she enjoyed greatly. She was first introduced to the activity by Lew Ayres in the early 1930s.

This photo was taken by Bob Landry and made it to the cover of the March 2, 1942 issue of LIFE.
