Followers can be fans, but not always. Listeners can be followers but not necessarily fans. Your audience includes fans, followers, & listeners, but these individuals are not automatically community members. Feeling lost? Let's untangle and define these 5 groups. Thread...

FANS are individuals whose devotion extends beyond just enjoying your music; they often feel a deep and personal connection with your life and values. Fans don't just listen; they invest their time and money in concert tickets, merch, and IRL experiences.

FOLLOWERS are often silent observers; individuals who opt in to receiving regular updates on DSPs and social but who don’t necessarily listen to your music or support you. Their following could be casual. In fact, some might only follow you because they find you entertaining.

LISTENERS consume your music on DSPs without necessarily engaging with your art, life, or career on a deeper level. They can be a fan or a follower, but often, they’re neither. A listener can consume your music passively through playlists but never lean in enough to become more.

A COMMUNITY is a group of individuals, usually all fans, brought together by their shared interest — in you, first, and in your music, second. Members interact online and in person with you and with one another, fostering a sense of belonging. A community is the Holy Grail.

An AUDIENCE is a collective group of people who consume your music and/or content either actively or passively. An audience includes fans, followers, listeners, and community members. Understand your audience, and don't conflate the sum total with any individual group.

If everyone shared new music instead of complaining about the state of music, the whole ecosystem would be healthier. Be the change you want to see.

NOBODY LISTENS TO GE OH All these consumers of music (not fans) demanding promo before they tap in to an artist’s music prompts a serious question. Do they really love music or do they just like the experience of being sold something?

We are in a hype first, art second phase of music culture driven by: Economic incentives (streams > sales) Technological gatekeepers (algorithms) Cultural fragmentation (fandom as identity) But art never dies. It just goes underground and waits for the pendulum to swing

I'm desperate for experts again. For actual journalist and critics. Simply having a phone and access to social media doesn't make you knowledgable on certain topics.

A deeper greater happiness can be found in letting go of attachment to all the stories of who you think you are, of who other people think you are, of what supposedly works, and of what supposedly doesn't work. You are not bound by your stories. You are boundless without them.

I really admire people that think of an idea and have to execute on it. Not for money but purely for the art of bringing dreams to reality. The best ppl, for real.

Elsie not Elise 💿 This isn’t an album thing, or even a music thing. It’s an everything thing. Nothing sticks because there’s too much content at our fingertips. Films are leaving theaters faster than ever. Weekly podcasts becoming dailies. It’s everything.
