The overarching goal of the Water Street Pilot, as stated in the May 2023 Council Motion, was to create “a more vibrant, people-friendly destination … enabling on-going activations including patios, music, events, festivals, and active transportation opportunities...”

Congratulations ABC for killing the Water Street Pedestrian Zone. It will now be weekend and event only, Cordova will be a two-way street. It means staff will be pouring cash into constantly opening and reopening streets and moving furniture, visitors will be confused. #vanpoli

Meiszner just voted to severely water down the Gastown car-lite pilot (weekends only! what a joke), and as a Vancouver councilor hasn't succeeded in pedestrianizing a single block in the entire city. We'll never get stuff like what Montreal has without political courage.

There will always be people and biz committed to the status quo who will fight any change like this. We'll only get change when we have political leadership willing to make bold moves to change the status quo. Vancouver desperately lacks that sort of leadership.

Anyways, when politicians keep on telling you "we love pedestrian spaces! we love public spaces!" but keep on voting against them... ...well, listen to what they do, not what they say.

WHOOA Vancouver Council just went OFF THE RAILS Bligh made a very minor procedural motion and it totally set off Kirby-Yung who said: "This is not the wild west of fucking procedure!" Then stormed off I think??? This is WILD

Spencer Powell (@beefshaver) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The mayor walking around eating, Sarah Kirby-Yung losing it at Klassen, the abrupt chaos of a council that is fueled by spite. Provincial politics has nothing on this. #vanpoli

Big day at council for Ken Sim & ABC! 1. Basically killed the Gastown pedestrian pilot 2. Partisan removal of non-ABC councilors from city roles 3. ABC infighting: "This is not the wild west of fucking procedure!" 4. Turning traffic cameras to live police surveillance tools

BREAKING: Vancouver City Council had the chance to improve on the missteps in this summer’s Water Street Pedestrian Street Pilot (see article, & my tweet thread). Sadly, but not unexpectedly, today they did the opposite. They made it worse, weekend-only. dailyhive.com/vancouver/gast…

Really relevant to Toronto’s bike lane crisis. But also relevant to a less extreme extent to Vancouver’s right wing Council bike-lane backsliding.

It's amazing that people are still pretending this is about Justin Trudeau's election (which happened at the very end of 2015) rather than the oil price crash that began in late 2014. You can see it right there in the chart.

He just can't help himself. Negotiations like this don't get wrapped up over one dinner -- unless you go in looking to surrender. Is that his preferred strategy here? #cdnpoli thestar.com/politics/feder…

I simply adore this wonderful building and love working in it, especially this time of year. The building staff do such an incredible and time consuming job making it so festive!

Brother, if you think 90 per cent of the country don't deeply despise Trump by the end of 2025, you're dreaming in technicolor. I'm not saying the Liberals will automatically be the beneficiary. But any political party which is seen as supporting him is going to regret it.

People in the Vancouver store say they were protesting what they say is the Indigo Jewish owner’s financial support of Genocide in Gaza. You can debate the details of that, but it seems dishonest to claim they were protesting her just because she’s Jewish. Facts still matter.
