🧵Nearly THREE YEARS after Institute for Justice argued the ankle-monitor case Meade v. ETOH, the 5th Cir. issued an unpublished opinion holding that a judge's private, monetary relationship with a private ankle-monitoring company does not "create an unconstitutional risk of judicial bias." 1/

There was no need for a factually similar case to overcome qualified immunity where an officer used a chokehold & punched a person who was compliant & subdued, CA11 holds per W. Pryor. The principle is established and its application beyond debate. media.ca11.uscourts.gov/opinions/pub/f… #N

NJ cities can take private property for "redevelopment" if it's blighted. What's blight? Perth Amboy says it's when there's trash and stray cats on adjacent city land. For that reason, two business owners, both children of communist refugees, could lose everything 1/x 🧵

In Institute for Justice case Bonin v. Meade, the 5th Cir.'s unpublished opinion downplays a judge's cozy relationship with a private ankle-monitor company. Despite the judge's ties to the company, insistence on its use, and threats of jail for unpaid bills, the 5th Cir. found no "risk of bias."

Weekend Update: Last week, Institute for Justice filed our brief in the 10th Cir. case Mendenhall v. Denver. We seek to overturn the Supreme Court’s thoughtless decision in Jones v. US, which deleted the Fourth Amendment’s requirement of an “Oath of affirmation” for a warrant. 1/

Sandy owes the city of Lantana, FL over $165,000 in fines--mostly because her family occasionally parked a car with two tires on their own lawn. The city sent her a notice, she moved the car and called the city, but the fines kept racking up for months. Does that sound excessive?

Sandy Martinez owes the City of Lantana $165,000 in code enforcement fines -- mostly because of how she parked her cars on her driveway (with one wheel partly on the grass). Institute for Justice is asking the Florida Supreme Court to intervene.
