Rewatching THE LEFTOVERS, and it still amazes me how long they keep Carrie Coon — maybe a top 3 best TV performance of the century — at the margins of this show before they let her loose. They let people hate this show, stop watching even, just to save her for the right moment.

Plus, a Drummond/Reed rotation might have helped them win a few more regular season games when Embiid was out, leading to maybe a less punishing first-round draw.

Wild that nobody mentioned the obvious People's Editor Brandy Jensen in this piece about who's going to succeed Remnick at the New Yorker. Starting a grassroots campaign now. semafor.com/article/04/28/…

He’s wrong — a majority of Americans disapprove of Israeli military action in Gaza (Gallup, late March poll). But Nate also misunderstands the point of these student protests. It’s not to mirror popular sentiment; they’re protesting to further *change* that sentiment.

It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that the Biden administration’s biggest successes have been in areas where they’ve been most welcoming of progressive ideas, their biggest failures where they’ve been the least.

Advances are so important obviously, but why does no one talk about royalties (which you have to earn the advance out to get)?

(Leading question—we have a marketplace problem.)

Most books Belt published in the past year already earned out their advances and the authors have received/will get royalty checks. If advances are reasonably pegged to realistic sales that’s how the system works.
