Very sad news. After archaeology at Cambridge Brian moved to the US, professor of anthropology UC Santa Barbara & writer of all things archaeological, shaming the rest of us by his output. I have a fond memory of interviewing him for British Archaeology, at our new overgrown home

Who doesn’t want to know what really happened on Easter Island? Whatever you might think, the story will surprise you. My book is out in the UK in September, & the US January. But if you pre-order now on Amazon you will get the lowest price it offers… currently 18% off in the UK

In between editing etc over the next week or so I’m blogging about how I wrote my new book, for anyone who wants to know how these things happen (quite a journey). It starts here, with how I got into the idea in the first place mikepitts.wordpress.com/2025/07/14/how…

Stonehenge alert! Nerdy, long & really shouldn’t have been needed, but with misinformation in peer-reviewed articles, Richard Bevins & colleagues (including me) felt the record had to be put straight. Why Stonehenge megaliths are NOT erratics Open access: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Deciding who can vote on the basis of their ability or inclination to properly engage with issues of the day would take us to a politically dark place that surely none of us would want to be

Here’s Part 2 of this series: how I went from school (discovering archaeology on the way) to getting my sixth book commissioned, from a starting point of no idea what to do & no industry contacts - you could do it too (with a bit of work & risk taking…) mikepitts.wordpress.com/2025/07/18/how…

The same often goes for museum repatriation arguments. Here in some ways it’s worse, because at least with vandalism cause & effect are easily separated. It’s become hard to engage in nuanced debate about museum collections because challenging a voice is seen as attacking a cause

No question this needs looking at while there are still people with memories of events, but really what it needs is good investigative research rather than an inquiry Dale Vince calls for Battle of the Beanfield to be included in Orgreave policing inquiry theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/j…

If anyone receives the attached email, please be assured it is NOT from me. In fact, I can only honestly think of few things I’d enjoy less right now than hearing from people who have a passion for storytelling…

I was recently stuck there in v long queues. The roads issue has nothing to do with Stonehenge: a north-south route meets the 2-lane A303 causing backups. Dualling would solve it, but would look horrendous. The tunnel hides that: it's to BENEFIT heritage bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The Chile US embassy warns of a Rapa Nui #tsunami. In 1960 a wave hit the island caused by a mag 9.5 earthquake, the largest ever recorded. It killed 1,600+ around the Pacific, & destroyed Rapa Nui's largest statue monument, Tongariki: see Emily Ross Mulloy’s extraordinary report

Tongariki was little recorded before or after the #tsunami. It was being rebuilt when I visited in 1994, but sadly the works destroyed archaeology & stonework. In my book, I use the only good pre-tsunami record, previously unpublished, made by Scoresby Routledge in 1914. My photo
