Great coaching is not about the search for perfection, it's about unearthing unique and special qualities in people. Youth players do not have to play like the first team, they do not have to play like current or former professionals. Make them the best at being themselves.

Having a ‘game model’ for players at youth level is one of the most selfish things a coach could do. Even up until U19 level, players should be taught to look for solutions that they can apply to different contexts. They should not be taught a ‘system’.

Except if you watch his teams, they are heavily instructed. Yes, they are attuned to different types of opposition pressure, but he offers the players solutions through a multiple choice system, and often through overly structured pattern play.
