Beaconsfield mine, Tasmania- scene of one of the great survival stories. Trapped underground in a small cage for 13 days, Todd Russell and Brant Webb returned to the surface on the morning of 9 May 2006. A cage of the same type they sheltered inside is displayed today.

The amazing Jiawei Shen, the subject of my brother James’s extraordinary film “Welcome to Babel”, winner of best documentary at the Sydney Film Festival. Jiawei’s monumental artwork covers the tortured history of communism in four panels around which his studio has been built.

These steel drums mark the former shoulder of the Japanese fortifications south of Duropa Plantation at Buna captured by the Australian 2/9th Bn on 18 Dec 1942. These are likely the first Australian troops to traverse that front line to the coast since the war.

The second phase of the 18th Brigade attack at Buna was the 2/10th Battalion attack along Old Strip. The Japanese had strong bunker positions at the western edge of the airstrip. Coconut logs were laid over the earth-filled drums base. The base of one of those bunkers remains.

The 2/10th Bn advance along Old Strip was supported by five Stuart Tanks, 4 of which were knocked out by Japanese 3-inch guns. Jack Lattimore’s tank is now at the Nimitz Museum in Texas. One of the 3-inch guns is shown in its revetment. One remains on the battlefield today.
