Findings by Office for National Statistics (ONS) show an average of 85 suicides in UK prisons a year, with 30% of all deaths being suicides. A study by Professor Philippa Tomczak on suicide in UK prisons was reviewed by PhD candidate Bradley Read, himself a former prison manager. Read it here: crimeandjustice.org.uk/publications/p…

I had little interaction with the bioethics folk at Manchester, but my career was shaped by a session where Margot recommended we think about what we would want to do next in a totally blue sky way. I should probably have fed this back to her, but only just reflected on it ❤️

The absolutely MASSIVE elephant in the room that HMG have conveniently ducked, is that cutting welfare will mean an increase in unpaid family caring. And that this will hugely, and unequally, affect women, who will be driven out of work and into both caring and poverty.

More than 80% of adult male prisoners in Scotland have a history of significant head injury, a study has found. Prof Tom McMillan and team have found the same high rate of significant head injuries for women and young men in prison in previous studies. heraldscotland.com/news/25019059.…

Sometimes people say that the answer to the stigma around “BPD” is more training. This article shows the more training and experience psychiatry trainees had, the worse their attitudes got onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…

The issue truly is a lack of mental health beds - no matter how NHSE try to dress it up. Without investing in more inpatient capacity, these “Mental Health A&Es” will become holding facilities for people who really need an admission. A kind of corridor care home treatment team.

It is PhD funding and postdoc application time! My interests are... eclectic, but if you are seeking to research criminal justice detention - particularly deaths, regulation/oversight/monitoring/accountability, voluntary sector involvement - give me a shout!
