I am a woman who got diagnosed with fibroids AFTER getting pregnant…& has relatives with similar experiences. My mum too(she has 6 kids!) Fibroids grew so big WHILE we were pregnant they could have cost us our pregnancies! Please don’t listen to those men!

The problem is you guys act like having children later is the cause of fibroids.. it is a risk factor!!! And there are many more like family history, race, obesity.

Fibroids are multifactorial- race, hormones, genetics, diet, vitamin D, and more. Nulliparity is just one associated factor and not a cause. Plenty of women with kids get fibroids. Plenty without kids don’t as well. Let’s not reduce women’s health to hot takes.

nefertiti Just ask them; if pregnancy is the ultimate fix (of which there’s no evidence ascertaining that), then why is it that it’s possible to have friboids even when pregnant?

You'd think she's exaggerating, but I'm a medical doctor and a senior doctor has given me the "ohhh, you used birth control, you deserve the hormonal hell you are experiencing post removal" attitude in the most condescending manner. I stopped seeing him.

Martha Ahumuza This conversation is often weaponized to control women's choices. This lot is never ready to have exhaustive discussions. They seldom discuss which fibroids (locations) cause issues. I believe it is up to us to calm our alarmed sisters into having children when they can afford.

Fibroids are hormone-sensitive and can occur at any age, regardless of whether you’ve had children. Pregnancy doesn’t protect against them. Fibroids have been found in girls as young as 1, 8, and 16 years. As long as hormones are present, the uterus is never truly dormant.

Stop “prescribing” pregnancy. It’s not a cure. So, a study in Human Reproduction (Laughlin-Tommaso et al., 2011) followed women over time and found: “Fibroid growth during pregnancy was common, especially in the first trimester, and growth patterns were unpredictable.”

But why do twitter doctors feel the need to act like they’re the first to learn about fibroids & nulliparity? Or out of the entire medical school it’s the only thing worth sharing with the community?

Finally, to the medical practitioners on this app, please remember that you have a duty to sensitise and educate the public with compassion and within the bounds of the ethical principles that guide our profession. (7/7)

on TL doctors: the fact that you went to medical school doesn't make your public opinions unquestionable. your expertise is respected, but in a world where access to information is widespread, it cannot be the final word we live in a time where disciplines are interconnected,
