Video game player since 1976. Kinda-sorta video game collector (mostly Gen5/Gen6 now). Probably quote-posts too much.

More of this, for all subscriptions please. So many services eff you when cancelling when it should be “Do you want to cancel?” YES “Good-bye.” No retention BS. No having to jump through eight hoops. No constantly changing the flow. Done and done, or pay up.

Madden, before The Grift. Ultimate Team undoubtedly contributed to the demise of the series, as focus shifted from trying to make good games to figuring out how to bilk money from customers after their purchase. And other sports sadly (though not surprisingly) followed suit.

It wouldn’t, if video game consumers could figure out how to grow a spine and say “no”. But consumers gonna consume, and corporations will build perpetual residence in their consumers’ wallets.

Internet connectivity for video game consoles brought some good, but also plenty of bad. Gen6 did it right. Not required, no patches or firmware updates to delay getting into a new game, no need to erase stuff from a hard drive in order to play, no greedy DLC/microtransactions.

We're scanning magazines again here at VGHF, and we think this has meme potential. (This is from the July 1998 issue of Game Developer, for an article about dealing with lag in online games)

Nope. Nintendo’s a piece of shit that deserves derision for doing this instead of selling its older games outright, and SEGA would be deserving of the same if it greedily decides to follow suit. Subscriptions without selling the games a la carte are bullshit.

Internet Rule #1: Never share being positive about anything because you’ll get eviscerated for it. It’s the people who shit on and ridicule others who get rewarded. Those who genuinely enjoy things become targets— if their posts are buried by the algorithm first.
