It’s an awkward moment to raise it, but it’s clear that one reason Viceroy Mountbatten accelerated India’s Partition so disastrously was because his nephew Philip’s imminent marriage to Princess Elizabeth mattered more #Partition47

Well said Sarfraz Manzoor, in today’s Sunday Times: he hopes the queen’s funeral ‘brings an opportunity to start talking honestly about the legacy and lingering scars of Partition’. My novel #IndiaBeDamned - a novel of Partition - is that.

Mountbatten was Viceroy. Vice-king. Partition was, by this point, unavoidable. But to do it in TWO MONTHS?? That was the sole inspiration of Dickie Mountbatten, Master of Disaster- great-uncle of our king and mother of a million deaths.anita anand

Very late in the day, Britain wakes up to the criminal disaster of how we quit India. Partition was coming. But with 2 months’ notice, no preparation, no army protection for the uprooted, border drawn in a rush by a British lawyer fresh off the boat? Those were Britain’s crimes.

Oh dear. So it’s official. Our ‘best’ (most on the box) actors can no longer fill a theatre with their natural-born voices. What have we lost with that? Immediacy. Intimacy.

Just finished this debut novel by ⁦Peter Popham⁩ on my way back from ⁦jaipurlitfest⁩. It’s a masterpiece: a gripping account of India on the eve of Partition, shiningly written, & with a rich cast of characters including Mahatma and the Mountbattens. Recommend
