Finished reading, 'Sedated: How Modern Capitalism Created our Mental Health Crisis' by Dr James Davies (PhD) 💭. It is without a doubt the best book I've read about public health. I can't recommend it enough.

Despite decades of research & huge financial investment, "not a single gene has been found that can be causally linked to schizophrenia". Furthermore, "the research has produced no improvements in treatments." Have we reached an ideological dead end? sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

“Intense 50 yr search for biomarkers in psychiatry has been a total flop.” - - Our diagnostic systems are arbitrary, ideological, unscientific & misleading. So why on earth would nature bow to them?

“[Neurodiversity] assumes a group of perfect neurotypical people, & promotes inclusion while putting people in boxes. We should ditch the “neuro” prefix and find other ways to value our diversity.” New article by Lucy Johnstone. 👇iai.tv/articles/the-n…

Is critiquing the over-medicalisation of distress a right- or left-wing move? Why are right-wing commentators co-opting the critique? My new blog on the politics of over-medicalisation - an attempt to address the accusations & resolve the confusions.👇madinamerica.com/2024/09/right-…

"For the left, people are suffering, but not from the problems the medical model thinks, [but] from complex social, financial & psychological determinants that require non-pathologising social, relational, psychological & economic solutions—not medical." madinamerica.com/2024/09/right-…

The left-wing critique of over-medicalisation goes further, arguing that medicalisation plays a crucial role in perpetuating dominant social injustices of the current capitalist regime. madinamerica.com/2024/09/right-…

Excellent, important piece by my friend Dr James Davies (PhD) 💭 on clarifying left vs. right wing critiques of overmedicalization of mental health. For the right, it’s about getting suffering people off state support; for the left, dismantling structures of capitalism that make us unwell.

All the #PTMF psychologist authors have worked in teams in frontline services with ‘severe MI’ - in Lucy Johnstone’s case, on 9 different inpatient wards & a number of CMHTs over several decades. 2 of the main authors were diagnosed with ‘severe MI’ themselves. Dr Janaway

"We need person-centred mental health care, not more psychiatrists.... Studies have shown that a person-centred, non-diagnosis-led and least-medicalised approach is more effective, quicker and with fewer clinical returns over the longer term." theguardian.com/society/2024/o…

The new ad4e book is a collective call to rethink mental health culture, challenge labels & the medicalisation of distress, and build a trauma-informed future that isn’t based on non-scientific constructs! #dosomething PCCS Books lnkd.in/efxA9p86

Yet another systematic review showing that around 1/2 of antidepressant users will experience withdrawal... The recent Henssler review (showing only 15%), is the outlier, because it mostly focused in short-term, drug company studies & included highly biased chart reviews.

Not everyone in distress has experienced what is seen as a ‘trauma.’ The #PTMF draws on, but also critiques and goes further than, trauma-informed assumptions and practice.

Ok, here we go: Much of my work concerns the history and return of scientific racism. I’ve written extensively about attempts to resurrect the shuffling corpse of race science and eugenics for many years. Bigotry dressed up as biology. 1/n
