Bar a few tiny tweaks I’ve now been awarded my PhD and will become Dr Alan Tonge. To go from a Man Utd pro/ bad injury to this makes me very proud indeed. A journey of ups and downs but well worth it. Nietzsche said ‘he who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.’ So true.

My great friend John Butterfield (‘old John’ to many) has passed away. The kindest, nicest bloke I’ve ever met! Never a bad word about anyone! Followed United home & away from 1938. We roomed together on Euro Aways for over 20 years! A wonderful man.

‘Old John’ was friends with some of the Busby Babes. He loved United with a passion. God bless you John! What a man. What a gentleman! RIP John - you will be missed by many 🥲

Old John’s family has just informed me. ‘John Butterfield’s funeral has been arranged for Tuesday 23rd May @ 1pm Peel Green cemetery (Liverpool Rd, Eccles) As yet, no venue for the wake has been arranged’.

A lovely funeral service for a lovely man! Thanks to all John’s family & friends for a fitting ‘send off’ 🥲 Any donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be gratefully received!
