Planning academics and the Victorian Liberal party don't seem to understand the basic mechanics of housing affordability. Emma Camp explains.

I buy into the 'character = trees' hypothesis. Look at this street in Coburg, one half is just garage doors and fence but it looks and feels great to walk down because of all the greenry.

Policymakers want to solve the NIMBY problem—but they’re working with the wrong diagnosis. Understand the cause, and you unlock the fix.

The new Housing Supply Council Report is generating dumb headlines. It finds that supply will fall a further 79,000 short of demand, UNLESS POLICY CHANGES. But given that policy clearly is changing (Ch 5.2.3), who cares? nhsac.gov.au/reports-and-su… 1/3

Homeowners actually love density. That's why they live in suburbs near cities––they love the dynamism that cities provide. What they don't want is density right next to them. This is similar to "people want a functioning government but don't want to pay taxes".
