Is the atmospheric growth rate of CO2 slowing down?

Total CO2 emissions have gone from 2%/yr growth (2000s) to 0%/yr (2010s).

Do we see that change in the atmosphere?

It is hard to answer 🧵

The African GHG Budget published, led by yolandi ernst

agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

The African continent is now estimated to be a net carbon source to the atmosphere from both its land systems (e.g., savannas, forests) and human activities (e.g., use of combustion fuels).

NOAA has published its first estimate of the growth in global-average CO₂ concentration for 2023, at +2.81 ppm. GlobalCarbonProject's forecast was 2.4 ppm, the average of a time-series analysis giving 2.39 and an ESM multi-model mean giving 2.41. Let's unpack this.

Coastal ocean might be a more efficient CO2 sink than the open ocean, as we found in our new paper led by Moritz Mathis. Find out why here👇

GHG emissions in 2023

UK: 383 MtCO2e with a population of 67 million

Australia: 459 MtCO2e for a population of 26 million

Impressive emissions decline in the UK.

The annual atmospheric increase in CO2 was a whopping 3.4 parts per million (ppm) in 2023.

Sure, it was fueled by El Nino, but I don't think anyone had on their bingo cards this large an increase.

Sweden has vast ‘old growth’ forests – but they are being chopped down faster than the Amazon.

And some evidence suggests that this is also happening in other boreal regions (Canada and Russia).

Great work from Anders Ahlström

The emissions intensity of India's GDP (emissions per unit of economic output) were declining sharply with economic development. But this decline has stalled in recent years as economic development is fossil-heavy.

Methane emissions from Boreal-Arctic wetlands are rising based on two decades of eddy covariance and chamber measurements, a trend not captured by our current modeling in the GlobalCarbonProject Global Methane Budget. Plenty of new testing and work needed.
