We are saddened to learn of the passing of pioneering surgeon Professor Sir Roy Calne, who has died aged 93.

Professor Calne, Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall, carried out the first liver transplant in the UK during his time at Cambridge.

Our thoughts are with his family.

Wish people wd stop saying gloomily that it took Tv to get the subpostmasters to the top of the agenda. This is (as Libby Purves has said I think) the real power of arts and drama (expertise that is being starved of funding) Message is: we need to fund the arts.

It may be raining but we won't let that dampen our spirits.

Thank you mary beard for making the case for humanities as part of the rich mix of arts, humanities & STEM subjects which academic & community life needs. And for reminding us, just as our last Hon Fellow Hayat Sindi did that the path to success involves hard work & even tears.

A.S.Byatt came up to Newnham College in 1954 to read English and was also an Honorary Fellow here. We will fly the College flag at half-mast today in her honour and to mark her passing.
