Parks didn’t run from discomfort. He aimed at it. That’s what made his work matter. So let’s not shy away about the context that made Parks the man + the work he created. youtu.be/1Jgqq76cSEE?si…

Early stroll. The moon is all style, all substance. There’s been a high tide of fallen leaves. An upstairs light suddenly announces its arrival. I see the running woman’s shadow approaching from behind me. A white door leaning beside another white door.

Early stroll. Somewhere behind that cloud the moon is bright. I imagine trying to name each fallen leaf. That road sign implies that bicycles can fly. Yesterday that camper van was parked the other way round. Someone walks down the middle of the road.

Early stroll. A temporary river of rain rolls down the street. Brake lights daub a wall red. A stately double decker at a bus stop. A hoover outside the chapel door. There are no lights on in the house I lived in as a child.

Sidney Lumet once called the car scene between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei “one of the most extraordinary pieces of acting I’ve ever witnessed.”

Earl stroll. Streetlights shove darkness to one side. The precise shadow of a wing mirror. The van with the papers in passes me on the way to the shop. I forgot my hi-vis jacket so I am a mobile area of darkness. The moon, the sudden moon.

Early stroll. One of my shoelaces rattles agains its shoe. The moon is narrow and sharp and bright. That attic window will always stare at the sky. A dropped piece of white paper like a foldable ghost. Two shattered umbrellas at opposite ends of the stroll.

Early stroll. Fallen leaves as consequences of passing time. A star like an electric full stop. That coil of wire represents circularity. A truck passes, loaded with temporary traffic lights. The newly-painted zebra crossing.
