cannot overstate how amazing NOAA Satellites are. In our new paper in RSE, Danielle Losos & team demonstrate an approach to use GOES-R, ML, and AmeriFlux and NEON Project eddy covariance data to estimate ecosystem carbon dioxide uptake in near-real time sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and

The 2026 budget passback plan calls for eliminating NOAA Research, the scientific backbone that keeps weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings accurate and effective. This would have disastrous consequences. Read the AMS statement, in partnership w/National Weather Association: bit.ly/4cz2RtC

Amer. Meteorological Soc. (American Meteorological Society) just issued a (fully justified) dire statement regarding rapidly accelerating & potentially disastrous efforts to decimate weather & climate enterprise in U.S. If implemented, this would cost many lives & cause major/ long-term economic harm.

More fantastic results from Sadegh Ranjbar demonstrating the unique value of NOAA Satellites for understanding the earth system. All sky (clear & cloudy, night & day) estimates of land surface temperature using ML, GOES-R & Ameriflux meas. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

📣 Following the dismissal of authors to the sixth National Climate Assessment, AGU & American Meteorological Society are proud to launch a first-of-its-kind special collection on U.S. climate science. We invite manuscripts to ensure this critical work continues. 🔗 lite.spr.ly/6001HyUU #NCA

The National Climate Assessment's authors and support staff were dismissed this week. AMS and AGU (American Geophysical Union) are stepping up to continue the momentum of vital U.S. climate research and analysis with a new open-access publishing effort. Read more here: bit.ly/4m3zRi8

#AAPIMonth Spotlight: Ankur Desai is Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor and Department Chair in the UW Atmos/Ocean Sci. Ankur is also an AMS Certified Consulting Meteorologist. He’s a former AMS STAC Commissioner and currently serves on the Atmospheric Research Awards committee.

Emeritus Professor Grace Wahba recently received the International Prize in Statistics in recognition of her groundbreaking work on smoothing splines, which transformed data analysis and machine learning. Wahba joined UW–Madison Statistics in 1967 as its first female faculty member.

Funding for hydrological science is critical for developing strategies for efficient water use.
