🚨 Paper alert! 🚨 It’s common for cross-cultural research to be conducted in a second language: a national majority language or lingua franca. But research among the Hadza, published today in PNAS Nexus, shows second languages can bias results. 🧵/14 academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/adva…

Nic van de Walle passed away yesterday. We have lost a comparativist and Africanist. His book with Mike Bratton helped many of us connect the early debates about democratization to Africa. He was a strong advocate for the study of Africa in the US. Here are some of his works.👇

We know a lot about how native-born individuals react to migrants. But how does migration shape the attitudes of migrants themselves? The first paper from our years-long field experiment on migration (w/ Nikhar Gaikwad and Aliz Toth) is ONLINE at AJPS ! (1/n)

🚨 New paper in the Journal of Development Econ. Are migrants from poor countries relatively high or low productivity workers? What happens to migration as incomes rise? Mariapia Mendola and I note: These are closely related questions with a counterintutive answer (thread)

Gino's case against us has been dismissed. Scientists cannot effectively sue other scientists for exposing fraud/errors in their work. Those who work to correct the scientific record can sleep better tonight. Those who don’t want it corrected, well, I don’t care how they sleep.

The World Bank revives its disgraced Doing Business Index, and I see many justified complaints. But I think the more general point is that every index is bad. All these mashups of multiple indicators hide more than they reveal. None are transparent, none are interpretable.
