John Lewis’s impact extended far beyond America’s shores. His example inspired civil rights activists in Northern Ireland where, six years ago, he joined another remarkable John crossing the Peace Bridge in Derry. His legacy on our island is a great one. He will be sorely missed.

So sad to hear of the passing of former President Mkapa. I always enjoyed meeting him and discussing Tanzania and his work promoting peace in the Great Lakes Region. Pumzika kwa Amani

John Hume has died. Ireland, all of us, should bow our heads in respect & thanks. What an extraordinary man, peacemaker, politican, leader, civil rights campaigner, family man, Derryman, inspiration. May he rest peacefully & his legacy live on. Sincere sympathy with Pat & family.

'In 90 seconds, 14 people lay dead and mortally wounded on the field and banks of Croke Park and on the streets outside. Tonight, 100 years on, we pause to remember them all: the 14 who went to a match, and never came home.' #B100dySunday

Today marks an important milestone. The 🇪🇺🇬🇧 Joint Committee endorsed practical solutions, ensuring the #WithdrawalAgreement is operational in time, as of 1 Jan 2021.   This means that we have delivered on our overarching objective to protect the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement.

#Brexit deal is very welcome after four long years of negotiations. Thanks to Ursula von der Leyen & Michel Barnier & team. While we will miss the UK from the European Union, the fact that a deal is now in place means we can focus on how we manage good relationship in the years ahead.
