Equity and equality are not the same. This is why it is so important that a child is at the centre of decision- making. Unfortunately, many children & families still do not experience this approach. We must ensure we are inclusive & our support is centred on the individual.

I'm curious as to what people think 'getting tougher' on school children means - more exclusions? Something else? Consequences are not solutions. We absolutely need a societal shift, but ensuring schools are inclusive, kind & compassionate environments is essential.

The current situation highlights just how much we need inclusion, compassion, responsibility and equity to be ingrained in a school's culture. The importance of a curriculum that focuses on critical thinking, diversity and hope.

I've never understood the argument that exams support those from disadvantaged communities more than coursework when the attainment gap continues to rise.

'Knowing things' is not enough. Children must be able to think critically & understand the dangers of confirmation bias. This is why the 'just tell them' rhetoric is so dangerous. As educators we have a responsibility to prepare children for life, not just exams.

Advice for new teachers starting in Aug/Sept on Edutwitter... Please don't feel guilty if you have spent the summer holiday having a holiday - that's what it's for. If you have gone into school- great! If you haven't- great! Do what works for you.

Exams in school are not fit for purpose. They continue to disadvantage our most vulnerable young people. They do not prepare young people for life and work. They negatively impact the mental health of young people.

Children have a right to an education. We are not their bosses. They are not paid to be at school. If you are not child-centred and do not think supporting children is the first priority of a school, I would question why you have decided on a career in education.

It's actually a strength to say, 'I don't know enough about this topic to comment', and then to stay silent. More silence is needed from the ignorant.

Please, please, please do not listen to people who discourage critical thinking. They discourage to suit their own agenda (usually profit-related). Knowledge is power, but whose knowledge? Those who question are 'dangerous' - GOOD. Keep questioning and challenging.

A school is not a business. A school is a place for belonging, support and learning - with young people very much at the centre. Some have lost sight of what education is and must be.

There's lots of chatter about behaviour in schools. IMO, everything comes back to a school's culture. Values, policies, etc., will vary based on a school's context, but ultimately, consistency across a school is key. One person can't do it all; you need the school community.

Making lessons 'fun' does not mean an early lunch. Fun means thought-provoking, working with peers, thinking critically, discovering, debating, learning outdoors, thinking creatively, applying learning to real-world situations, leading learning... But you already knew that.

Looking forward to the return to school tomorrow, but grateful for another day of reading and home comforts before the spring term. 🙏 ☕️ 📚

In what world does children putting their hands in the air due to the anxiety of consequences and shouting over their peers during paired discussion demonstrate good learning and teaching? It's not just me, right?

The rate of exclusions & suspensions in England is on the rise. Permanently excluded children are twice as likely to be involved in serious violence THE YEAR they are excluded. Exclusions are not the solution & schools need to be supported to see that. theguardian.com/education/2025…

Trauma has a significant impact on young people's wellbeing and sense of self. These come before attainment. Schools that dismiss trauma or seem to think that young people need a certain 'level' of trauma before they can be taken seriously is deeply concerning.
