Novel enzyme starts with promiscuity. Excited to share our study that shows how #evolution recruits a single enzyme for multiple purposes, showcasing the plasticity and flexibility of #metabolism. Huge thanks to my colleagues at SYBORG & Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology! rdcu.be/dXaqU

Our latest work on a #nitrogenase-like enzyme, the methylthio-alkane reductase which surprisingly also contains large nitrogenase metalloclusters, the P-cluster and the [Fe8S9C]- (L)-cluster is now online: doi.org/10.1101/2024.1… Have a look at the 🧵 by @AnaLagoMaciel.

New paper from us and SYBORG by Luca Schulz : embopress.org/doi/full/10.10…. It's about the evolution of essentiality. This question has fascinated me for a long time: How does a component that was previously unnecessary for some function become essential for it?

Exciting times! Our latest preprint is now live 🤩! I truly believe this is one of the most significant contributions we've made. It offers fresh hypotheses about how pandemic Vibrio cholerae spreads globally. Let’s dive in!🧵..1/n biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Lets talk about #acetyl-CoA! As central molecule in C1 metabolism, the efficiency of its assimilation determines yields. Read below about our Lcm as novel activity in the shortest O2 tolerant route to make pyruvate from acetyl-CoA while fixing #CO2! nature.com/articles/s4146…

Our second paper on the bacterial toxin colibactin is now out on mBio, this time we critically evaluated the claim that colibactin toxicity necessitates cell-cell contact 🧪🦠🧵(1/9) journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

New paper from the lab: rdcu.be/d2g28. You may remember the strange fractal assemblies we discovered in citrate synthase. Well, the reason we even found that protein is that we were interested in how conserved self-assembly is in an enzyme with a very basic function.

Our latest work on Biocomputation in Bacterial Consortia is out in Nucleic Acids Res 😀. In a process we term "intercellular CRISPRi", filamentous phages transmit DNA messages from sender to receiver cells to regulate gene expression by CRISPR interference. doi.org/10.1093/nar/gk…
