Passing child care and paid leave would be a boon for the U.S. economy, according to Moody’s Corp, projecting “policies such as paid family leave and universal pre-kindergarten could result in a $1 trillion boost to gross domestic product by 2028.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

While you were (hopefully) sleeping, the House Judiciary committee advanced SB 71, a truly terrible bill that takes away the power of locally elected officials to pass policies broadly supported by their voters.

If this passes cities would be subject to the whims (or more likely inaction) of the state on minimum wage, paid leave, apprenticeship programs, conversion therapy bans, and just about anything else. Local officials know what their cities need- let them serve their constituents.

SB71 denies communities the authority to enact #PaidLeave. This action makes it harder for workers who are caring for newborn children and loved ones. Paid Leave Works for West Virginia! Lawmakers need to EXPAND paid leave - not preempt it. #WVLegis cc: @paidleavewv

Two-thirds of women with young children are workers fueling America’s economy. Nearly half are their family’s primary breadwinners. The pandemic only exacerbated women's struggle to juggle #Childcare, online school, & earning a paycheck with most not having access to #paidleave

Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia strongly urges Senator Joe Manchin and Chuck Schumer to include funding for WV childcare in the reconciliation package negotiation. Over 60% of WV is a childcare desert which is a huge burden on working parents of young children. #SolveChildCare

This! West Virginia could enact a permanent paid leave program, nearly double the number of subsidized child care slots statewide, and give every child $250 with its remaining surplus. #paidleaveforall #solvechildcare

A year ago, Paid Leave Works for WV kicked off #PicnicsForPaidLeave at our picnic in Wheeling, WV. West Virginia workers are still faced with the impossible choice of caring for their newborn or a sick relative or losing their job that they need to pay the bills. WV needs #PaidLeaveForAll

I will forever holler about the necessity for Paid Leave for All. Workers will always need to be able to take care of their health and families. Having to fight for one day of paid sick time is despicable.
