The archaeological section of the City Museum in Rimini is a revelation. I am especially fond of this Anubi mosaic from the late 2nd to early 3rd century AD.

Be blown away by the sheer scale and beauty of the mosaic work in Galla Placidia’s mausoleum in Ravenna. The brilliant sky adorned with stars stretches above a scene of the good shepherd tending to his flock.
#MosaicMonday - The Chariot Race panel from the Horkstow Mosaic: ca. 4th Century AD. Discovered in 1797, the scene is arranged in two registers showing the race on either side of the central spina. #Roman #Art

For #SpoliaSunday we're off to the MAF_Firenze to admire this upcycled ancient #bronze statue of a lamp-bearer, found in #Pesaro in the lands of the #dellaRovere duchy of #Urbino and sent to #Florence as a wedding gift from the duke to his heiress in 1630.
Who wouldn't want to spend their Saturday a.m. talking worst emperors with the wonderful The Partial Historians🏺 ?Much fun and interesting conversation was had. Set up my weekend on a high.
It’s been a privilege watching these frescoes of scenes from Trojan mythology emerge from the pumice in Region 9, Pompeii Sites.
And what an unforgettable experience it’s been working with Rebecca Morelle and others to bring these discoveries to the public gaze this week. #Pompeii .
For #RomanSiteSaturday , the odeon of Nicopolis, constructed in the first half of the 2nd century CE with a capacity of about 1,600 spectators.

This tempera-on-linen mummy shroud was created during the Roman era in Egypt. He appears to be on the cusp of adulthood, given the wispy facial hair. The boy has a beautiful wreath on his head, and the bird on his shoulder may represent Horus or Harpocrates.

For #SarcophagusSaturday we're going back, back, back in time, to October 2023 when I took this photo of a late #Mycenaean #larnax in the #Louvre in #Paris . The undulating linear patterns on this #terracotta box are heirs to the spiral reliefs in earlier cemeteries.
