Long-ish vid but worth watching, esp for 2nd half: 1) Eugene Lee Yang articulates a lot of thoughts that reflect my own tension with online content creation vs need for privacy and security; and 2) Eugene briefly highlights the incredible impact of our online AsAm community.

“Have you ever read the box our blender came in?” “No, why?” We have spent the better part of two days discussing the strangest claim here. We think it’s that last one, that blended foods will allow us to “find a total sense of calm and well being”

Have had to take some time off work due to a recurrence of trauma symptoms. Re-upping this thread from a few years ago in case it’s helpful for anyone out there. If you’re going through something similar, you’re not alone. ❤️

For 35 years, Chinese leaders have tried to erase all memory of the Tiananmen protests and the brutal massacre that crushed them. Last week I found a file of photos I took in Beijing in 1989, most of which I haven't seen since. I will post some now to commemorate those times.

This June 4 marks #Tiananmen35. For @TheNation, I write about grieving and preserving memory from an ocean away, amid violent crackdowns of Students 4 Gaza encampments, and why reclaiming the legacy of Tiananmen demands releasing it from Cold War politics: thenation.com/article/world/…

In March, a woman took to Bilibili to share a medal her father, a PLA veteran, earned. It was one of the notorious “Defender of the Capital” badges handed out to troops that occupied Beijing in 1989. The video was soon censored but… chinadigitaltimes.net/2024/06/new-ju…

WBUR's Morning Edition featured a powerful conversation with two individuals who lived through the busing era. Listen and catch interview highlights here: wbur.org/news/2024/06/1…

Leola Hampton was a high school student in 1974 when Boston’s busing program began. Phase one started by busing Black and White high school kids to each other’s neighborhood for school. Hampton recalls being surrounded by hate as she was bused through South Boston.

Suzanne Lee was about 25 years old when she found out about Boston’s busing initiative to desegregate schools. Lee, who was also transferred to a school in Charlestown, saw firsthand how difficult the transition was for the Chinese students, many of whom didn't speak English.

Fifty years ago this week, a judge ruled that the Boston School Committee had willfully segregated Boston Public Schools. The fallout from that decision continues to shape the city. Our new series about Boston's busing "crisis" debuts today. 🧵

Since January, I've been working with The Emancipator as they've re-launched with EIC Jamil Smith جميل كريم. I'm so proud of the package they've just published on the 50th anniversary of the Boston Busing "Crisis" and how we discuss desegregation in America. theemancipator.org/busing/

We have to stop calling it the Boston ‘busing crisis’. It was the Boston segregation crisis. Most Boston students were bused before ‘busing’ to maintain the city’s segregated schools. My piece on the 50th anniversary of decision ordering desegregation: theemancipator.org/2024/06/19/edu…

China's censors took down an article calling for Biden to bow out that opened: "The greatest contribution some men make to their Party, country, and people is transferring power, stepping off the stage, and heading home to hug their grandson." None-too-subtle Xi Jinping ref.
