Captain Harding Waipuke Leaf of the 28 (Māori) Battalion was killed in action on Crete in WWII. His war trunk was returned to his whānau and is now on display at Waitangi Treaty Grounds. His granddaughter kindly allowed our curator Caitlin to video the first aid kit & contents.

Public health around smoking used to be very different. Did you know that in 1914, King George V's daughter sent tobacco tins to members of the British, Colonial and Indian Armed Forces for Christmas? 🚬🎁 #museum #healthhistory #history #ourhealthstoriesnz #ourhealthjourneysnz

105 years ago today SS Talune arrived in Western Samoa with the Influenza Pandemic. NZ colonial authorities failed to consider the risk of sick people on board with disastrous ramifications: 8500 dead or 22% pop. The death ship continued to spread the pandemic to Fiji and Tonga.
