In Ottawa, the "greenbelt" comprises the rural townships that were amalgamated with the city years ago - a huge geographic area and an overlooked resource for the city to ensure natural systems (wetlands and forests) are protected - and protect the urban area from flooding.

Nature based solutions for Ottawa should ideally include preserving, protecting and elevating the importance of natural systems in the rural areas of the city - forests, woodlands, trees, wetlands, shoreline buffers - all "natural assets"

💧Wetlands are often referred to as the 'kidneys of the planet' because of their vital role in filtering and purifying water. But their importance doesn't stop there. 🌱Wetlands play an important role to support and sustain life on Earth. #WetlandConservation #WetlandsMatter

Marshes and swamps across the Greenbelt Foundation are still hard at work! By holding and slowing releasing waters from yet another major rainfall event they reduce the risks & impacts of flooding. Wetlands in the greater urban ecosystem are an essential asset for our cities. Conservation Ontario

American goldfinches thrive in semi-wooded areas such as field margins and roadsides with trees - like the living snow fence program recently piloted by the City of Ottawa! (great video!)

The impact of trees is present in our everyday lives. They purify the air we breath & water we drink, provide habitat for wildlife, cool our homes & cities, provide food for humans, animals & plants, and more. Every part of a tree is important & plays a vital role in our lives.

Fall migration is here and our volunteer patrollers are on the move to help save birds from glass collisions all across Ottawa. Unfortunately, these birds won’t complete their migratory journey. All of them were found by one patroller in the same day. 💔

Fall migration has started early and FLAP volunteers are already finding injured birds. Since August 4th , there have been 67 bird collisions reported in the GTA on the Global Bird Collision Mapper. 33 of these birds were found by one patroller in Markham in a single day.
