Even though Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) is best known for «Cavalleria rusticana» (1890), «Iris» (1898) is clearly his best opera. Gustav Mahler was a fan and favored Mascagni over Puccini, (which I think is a bit of a stretch 😅)
