the siege of sarajevo started 32 years ago today. in the 1,425 days of the siege over 1,600 children were killed. the effects of this are still felt today. in the 181 days of israel's latest attack on gaza 14,000 children have been killed. i find this loss incomprehensible.

I really hope it sinks in, really truly, not as a rhetorical point: what you're watching in Gaza is as bad as anything ever done to anyone. Any atrocity you care to name, this is in the same category, whatever the death toll turns out to be. This is it. You're here and this is it

What is crushing is that I feel I know this child, her sisters and brothers, the person she might grow up to be, the adult who, like my father, was a child when his home was bombed and his father executed.

It’s hard for me to understand how others do not recognize this child.

If you read this, read about a kid getting his arm amputated without anesthetic, and your response is simply to shrug and say ‘But Hamas…’ then you need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror.

If any Western journalist was subjected to this horror, every reporter and media organization would condemn it. There would be no hiding behind some convenient interpretation of objectivity or neutrality because everyone would suddenly remember that silence is neither.

Something that strikes me about Palestinian journalists. They lay press vests on coffins, they wear them to funerals. They are proud of their profession and they honour it. And yet so many journalists are silent about what is happening to them. They deserve our solidarity.
