Fair is foul and foul is fair. My new dispatch from the topsy-turvy world of post-Trump Kyiv, pregnant with resentment, paranoia and pre-election speculation. economist.com/europe/2025/03…

Russian deputy FM says Russia cannot accept US/Ukraine proposal for a ceasefire, because it doesn't address the "root causes" of the war. In other words, Russia wants a pathway to the end of Ukrainian sovereignty before it stops shooting. I don't see how this war can end soon.

Re-reading the Danish intelligence report from February 2025, which, I think, is the least conservative assessment of Russian reconstitution timelines & capability among all the published views from European intelligence services in the past year. fe-ddis.dk/globalassets/f…

While Russia attacks Ukrainian playgrounds with cluster warheads, Ukraine successfully strikes Russia’s only fiber-optic cable manufacturer, in Saransk. Optic-fiber-guided drones, impervious to jamming, have become commonplace on the Ukrainian frontlines in recent months.

I would kindly refer Mr Dmitriev to behavioural patterns of his boss. For sake of clarity, the referenced text was written by Arkady Ostrovsky. I believe key is what Ukraine would emerge from period of war centralisation. On that, it’s an open question. Not so with the Kremlin.

100pc. There are concerns about some of the instruments deployed during war time. But a reliable rule of thumb is that those who make a Ukraine=Russia or Zelensky=Putin comparison are ignorant or making a political attack — or mix thereof.

There has been a lot of coverage about the Ukrainian uncrewed vessel shooting down at least one, possibly two Russian fighter bombers recently. It is a significant moment in 21st century war. But military institutions have much to do to exploit such capabilities. 1/5 🧵🇺🇦 (Image:

Falls for Putin's trap of direct talks, but note the skepticism it will yield any result. Suggests it's Ukraine's call to read whether a deal is possible, and defers to a European response first, backed by an American one. Then he ends with slagging off Putin for his Victory Day

Zelensky has yet to decide if he travels to Turkey to face an empty chair, with Putin likely declining his challenge for direct talks. “The president wants to meet with Erdogan at least,” Zelensky's spokesman tells me. “Putin still has time to decide.”

My latest dispatch from last night / this morning. The key question: Is Trump even capable of acknowledging Putin’s obfuscation? The jury is still out on that. economist.com/europe/2025/05…

1/2 Really is the key question–there's some wishful thinking going around, with the idea that Trump would immediately see Putin's absence as a proof Russia isn't serious. That may happen, but given how Trump as acted in the past, it is far from a given. Another issue is that...
