Berkeley's Carbon Flux Explorers (CFE) were deployed 24 times from R/V Roger Revelle during the 2017 California Current LTER CCE_LTER process study. Today Dr. Hannah Bourne published first calibration of CFE's optical data vs. C,N and P flux biogeosciences.net/16/1249/2019/. One more step!

While on a field trip to Point Reyes National Seashore and Mclures Beach with my aquatic and marine chemistry class we noticed an indication of a road problem ahead.... a few orange cones...

WHOA! Water did that! Well actually >5 inches of rain fell in one day on Feb 27th 2019 (some nearby areas got 20" in two days) and that triggered the massive failure of the hillside supporting the road. The source of this moisture was the ocean. And there's more....

And there were large scale failures of both hillside and ocean cliffs. photo taken March 10th. I'm impressed by the power of water. What looked like a little problem was far bigger than imagined.

We have been working for 15 years to develop autonomous robots that can measure particle flux is the water column. During the Aug 2005 VERTIGO expedition aboard R/V Roger Revelle, while scientists were not looking, Ken Buesseler's Ken Buesseler robots had some fun. Enjoy

For fans of R/V Roger Revelle, April 15th 2019 21:28UTC was the last AIS report from the ship as it started refit in Portland. AIS identity came alive Mar 29 2020 17:58 UTC heralding a return to the fleet. Find Revelle in the attached Google Earth image from May 2019? More to come.

For fans of ⁦⁦GEOTRACES⁩ , a visit to London’s Kew Gardens July 25 2019 gave us a neodymium delight. Hope all are safe. Work by Chihuly.

July 16 2019. In plane over southern Greenland. this was scary to see. Check out ⁦National Snow and Ice Data Center⁩. 2019 was a banner year for ice melt. An #earthday reminder that warming continues to impact the water cycle including sea levels. For science geeks, explain the blue color.

Remembering the Sept 20 2019 youth climate strike. UC Berkeley students had one of thousands of demonstrations. Many high school students and parents present. Crowd energy hard to achieve on zoom.

For fans of R/V Roger Revelle, the ship did its first out of dry dock run on the Columbia river yesterday. Great to know the global class oceanographic research vessel operated by scripps is advancing out of midlife refit.

For fans of R/V Roger Revelle, the Revelle has ventured to sea for the first time to celebrate July 4th. Great news. Follow its progress using its call sign KAOU. According to marine traffic, it is scheduled to dock in San Diego at the scripps marine facility on July 7.
