A wise friend proclaimed the other day that the biggest failing of Afghan leaders was hubris. The republic was brought to power and believed nothing would dethrone them whilst the Taliban pulled off such a magnificent victory that they believe they cannot set a foot wrong.

Claiming that “most evacuated Afghans are Pashtuns with tribal links to the Taliban” and that they now “live in palaces” is not only factually baseless, it promotes a toxic ethnic stereotype that vilifies an entire group, many of whom fled Taliban violence and persecution.
